McIlroy visits The European Tour offices

Newly crowned US Open Champion Rory McIlroy took time out from his busy schedule to pay a visit to the offices of The European Tour at Wentworth on Monday afternoon

George O'Grady welcomes Rory McIlroy to Tour HQ

The Northern Irishman, who won by a stunning eight shots at Congressional two weeks ago to claim his first Major Championship, was welcomed to the Tour offices by Chief Executive George O’Grady before the 22 year old met up with Tour staff who offered him their own congratulations.

“It was really good to meet up with George, Richard Hills, David Garland and some of the Tour staff today,” said McIlroy. “The European Tour has done so much for me over the last few years, starting when I was an amateur when they helped me get into events through to being part of The Ryder Cup team. I feel very much part of this Tour so it’s nice to come back and say hello as the US Open champion.”

George O’Grady said: “It was great to welcome Rory to our offices today so that he could see how much his victory in the US Open had been enjoyed by every single one of us who works here.

“We were all genuinely delighted to see what he achieved at Congressional and today gave us the chance to reflect on that victory as well as wishing him all the best for the remainder of the season.”

Before he departed, McIlroy had even further reason to celebrate with the news that he had moved up to Number Three on the Official World Golf Ranking.

“It’s another step towards my ultimate goal of being the best player in the world but I have two great players ahead of me in Luke Donald and Lee Westwood,” he said. “I have overtaken another great player in Martin Kaymer this week, all of which just underlines the strength of European golf right now which I am delighted to be a part of.”
