McIlroy's Major moment wins Shot of the Month

Rory McIlroy has added more silverware to his trophy cabinet after his magnificent tee shot at the tenth hole en route to victory in the US Open Championship was voted by fans as The European Tour Shot of the Month for June.

The Northern Irishman’s superb six iron at the 214-yard par three on the final day was inches away from a hole-in-one after the ball pitched five yards beyond the pin before trickling back toward the cup.

The shot was met with a rapturous reception on the green and the fans of My European Tour have also given it their approval as it received two thirds of the votes polled.

The 22 year-old described it as a crucial moment in an unforgettable final round which culminated in the first Major of his career.

“I thought that was probably the biggest point in the round because (Y.E) Yang had just stuck it in there close,” reflected McIlroy.

“So to follow that shot up with mine, it was pretty cool, and to get the ovation coming on to the green was nice too.”

Thorbjørn Olesen’s wonderful pitch which dropped into the hole for an eagle in the final round of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi came in second place while Thomas Levet’s magical putt for birdie at the fourth hole in the final round of the Alstom Open de France, where he claimed the title 25 years after he first played in the competition, came third.

One lucky winner who selected McIlroy’s shot in the My European Tour section of europeantour.com won an on-course navigation device, the GPS GolfBuddy World.

The winners of each Shot of the Month will be put forward for The European Tour Shot of the Year, won last season by Graeme McDowell for his unforgettable birdie putt on the 16thgreen of The Celtic Manor Resort which helped Europe regain The Ryder Cup.

McIlroy joins the other monthly winners so far – Paul Casey (January), Alvaro Quiros (February), David Horsey (March), Matteo Manassero (April) and Luke Donald (May).
