McIlroy rises to World Number Three

US Open Champion Rory McIlroy had further cause for celebration after he rose to a career-high third in the Official World Golf Ranking.

The 22 year old Northern Irishman, who won by eight shots at Congressional a week ago, overtook Martin Kaymer after the German failed to finish in the top eight at the BMW International Open in Munich.

With Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood World Numbers One and Two respectively, it is the first time since the Ranking was launched in 1986 that the top three spots have been occupied by United Kingdom golfers.

Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden rose from 110th to 61st following his victory in the Travelers Championship on the US PGA Tour.
