McIlroy ready to rack up more Majors

Rory McIlroy is going in hunt of a third US PGA Championship title this week confident he can add many more Major Championships to his collection.

The Northern Irishman has four Majors in his trophy cabinet so far including wins at this event in 2012 and 2014 that top a remarkable record.

McIlroy finished in a tie for third in his first two US PGA Championships in 2009 and 2010 and has a further top ten from 2013 when he finished in a tie for eighth.

With Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson all claiming their maiden Major Championships this season, it would appear that the battle for the top titles is more intense than ever but McIlroy - who last won a Major at this event in 2014 - is in no doubt he can keep winning on a regular basis.

"I'd love to sit here and say I'm going to win a Major every year. I could retire at 40 and be very happy," he said.

"I think it is realistic, I really do. If you can win one of the four every year; if you're that good, you can do that. I think it is realistic. I think that is achievable.

"We've seen in the past that is achievable. That's the benchmark. That's what you're trying to get to. It's hard, it (the field) is so deep.

2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, in that stretch of four years, I averaged a Major a year. So there's no reason to think that I can't do that for the foreseeable future - Rory McIlroy

"Obviously that's what my benchmark is, and I feel like I can attain that.

"I have to play my best golf and sometimes it's hard to come up with your best golf each and every week. But I definitely think it's attainable."

The Race to Dubai champion is enjoying another brilliant season on the European Tour with a win at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation to go with a further five top tens - including at the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship - in nine events.

The 27 year old has extremely lofty standards, however, and believes a win this week at Baltusrol Golf Club would take his campaign to an elite level.

A grade this year; I'd say like a B-minus, maybe B. It's okay. I could change that into an A-plus on Sunday - Rory McIlroy

"There's a lot of golf left, last Major of the year, and I want to give it my all to get in the mix and try to win another one of these things before I have to wait another eight months to try to get another opportunity at Augusta next year."

And with two US PGA Championships already under his belt, McIlroy knows what it takes to win this event.

"You've got to drive the ball in the fairway and pretty long as well," he said. "There's a lot of par fours that are sort of up in the 480-500 yard mark. You've got to drive it well.

"I think the greens are so big, as well. You're going to see a lot of guys hit a lot of greens. I think lag putting is going to be a big thing. If you have good speed on the greens, I think that's going to be a big help."
