McIlroy happy with halfway showing

Rory McIlroy was delighted to leave himself in contention going into the weekend at the US PGA Championship.

The Northern Irishman returned to Whistling Straits on day two and completed his first round 71 before adding a second round 68.

That was enough for a five under par halfway total, three behind clubhouse leader Matt Kuchar.

And McIlroy felt afterwards he was well placed to strike as he aims to follow compatriot Graeme McDowell and become a Major Champion.

“I feel as if I'm in a really good position going into the weekend and yeah, I like the position I'm in,” said the 21 year old.

“It's a nice place to be. And only three behind at the minute - we'll see how the guys in the afternoon make out, but I feel as if I'm in a strong position and a position where I can make a charge for the weekend.

“I'm in a great position and I can just go out and I'm not that close to the lead and I'm three behind and I can just go out and play some good positive golf.”
