McDowell makes flying start

Graeme McDowell immediately set about eating away at Tiger Woods’ advantage as the final pairing got under way on the last day of the WGC - Cadillac Championship.

McDowell reached the green in two on the par five first, two-putting impressively for birdie, while Woods had to settle for par.

That meant the 2010 US Open Championship winner was just three shots adrift of Woods, chasing his seventh triumph in the event and second at Trump Doral.

Phil Mickelson, 15 under alongside McDowell, was threatening a trademark charge having birdied the opening two holes, the second via a fine putt from 15 feet.

Earlier, Matteo Manassero illustrated his vast quality with an impressive 66.

The precocious Italian, who followed back to back 71s with a disappointing 75 yesterday, showed those in contention what is possible via an outstanding effort.

Many expected scoring to prove difficult in round four with the Blue Monster course hit by trademark winds, but Manassero looked untroubled.

The 19 year old found a birdie on the par five first and never looked back, picking up further shots on the fourth, seventh and eighth prior to the turn.

Not content with those efforts, Manassero then added a further four birdies on the back nine, only to double bogey the difficult 18th and end six under for the day, five for the tournament.

Another player enjoying a fine day was World Number One Rory McIlroy, who - having eagled the first - picked up birdies on five, ten and 11 to be eight under overall, five for the day.
