Mason has his sights on more history

Englishman Carl Mason can create more European Senior Tour history next week when he attempts to capture a hat-trick of Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters titles at Woburn Golf Club.

The 57 year old, who earlier this season equalled compatriot Tommy Horton’s record of 23 victories, will become the most prolific winner in Senor Tour history on his own if he can capture another title over the Duke’s Course where he previously triumphed in 2006 and 2007.

Mason’s victory in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, which drew him level with Horton was the latest in a series of records he has set in eight seasons on the Senior Tour.

Already this year he became the first player to pass the €2million mark in career earnings, while other Senior Tour records he holds include the joint lowest round (61 in the 2008 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open) and the quickest player to win five events, doing so in just 12 appearances.

He is also the only player to win the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters crown on two occasions.

The three time Order of Merit winner will face some stiff competition to make it three victories however, with Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam both hoping for their first triumph of 2010.

Torrance and Woosnam will attempt to become the second former Ryder Cup Captain to capture the title following Mark James’ victory in 2005.

Also in the field will be the Senior Tour’s latest champion Barry Lane, who claimed his maiden victory in last week’s Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scottish Seniors Open to add to the Scottish Open he won on The European Tour.

He will bid for another double when he attempts to add the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters to the British Masters he won at the Marriott Forest of Arden in 2004 – the last of his five European Tour wins.

Four of the last five winners of the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters have been English, with Zimbabwe’s Tony Johnstone breaking the sequence last year after James (2005), Mason (2006, 2007) and Gordon J Brand (2008) claimed consecutive titles in front of the home support.

The Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters celebrates its tenth anniversary this year over the picturesque Duke’s Course, which has a proud tradition of hosting top international golf events.
