The 19 year old, already seeking a third European Tour title and with five top-ten finishes behind him this season, parred the first four at The Celtic Manor Resort but then birdied the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth.

That moved him to two under for the week - four behind halfway leader Ross Fisher, who was yet to tee off.

Spain’s Carlos Del Moral also made good progress, three birdies in his first seven holes putting him level with Manassero.

Manassero’s compatriot Lorenzo Gagli showed that good scoring was possible on Moving Day with a five under par 66 including a holed approach at the 16th, which gave him the early clubhouse lead on level par.

Five days on from qualifying for the US Open Championship Manassero added a fifth birdie in six holes at the short tenth and went joint third on three under.

Fisher's lead was wiped out in the first two holes. He bogeyed the 465 yard first after pushing his opening drive into the rough and Slattery then made a 18 footer for birdie on the long next. They were five under, two in front of compatriot Chris Wood, Manassero, Thai Thongchai Jaidee and Dutchman Tim Sluiter.
