Manassero and Gaunt chasing further glory

Matteo Manassero sees no reason why he cannot follow the biggest victory of his career with another title at this week’s Nordea Masters.

The 20 year old Italian held his nerve to capture The European Tour’s Flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club on Sunday after a play-off, but rather than bask in the glory of his fourth career title Manassero has travelled to Bro Hoff Slott near Stockholm.

“What happened on Sunday afternoon was really magical. Sometimes I look back and it brings a nice smile to my face,” he said. “But I’m here now so I’m looking ahead. That was a really nice part of my career but we have got a long season still ahead.

“All the congratulations you receive are all very nice – it’s always nice to receive compliments from the guys on Tour and the caddies.

“There are so many weeks where I’m not playing well and struggling and I’m playing well now so I want to try to use it.”

Manassero is making his first appearance in Sweden and spoke highly of a golfing venue that has produced high-calibre winners such as Lee Westwood and Alex Noren in recent years.

“The nature is beautiful, it’s a really different place,” he added. “I heard Stockholm is a great city so I’m looking forward to visiting it. It’s a great event. I’ve played nine holes – if the wind blows it could be one of the toughest courses I’ve ever played to be honest. You can really gain shots or mess it up as well.”

Another player in the field who was celebrating on Sunday night was Australian Daniel Gaunt, who lifted the Telenet Trophy on the Challenge Tour.

The 34 year old also needed a play-off in Belgium, and admits he has not had much time to revel in his second Challenge Tour title.

“I didn’t really have time to let it sink in on Sunday as I went home, straight to bed and then came here, but the response from everyone has been brilliant,” said Gaunt.

“My mind is on this week so I’ll try to get another win.”
