Major field set to headline Commercial Bank Qatar Masters

The former World Number One, who won the US PGA Championship in 2010 and the US Open in 2014, will be a star attraction in Doha as he seeks to add to his 11 European Tour titles.

“I’m excited about returning to the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters as it was a regular part of my schedule for many years and it’s a great tournament,” said Kaymer.

I like the layout, it’s nice weather in Doha at that time of year and it has produced many great winners. Hopefully I have the chance to join that list.

Els won on his tournament debut in 2005 and will be playing the event for a ninth time – and fifth in succession. Bjørn competed in the tournament’s first edition in 1998 and has played 12 times, winning in 2011.

Lawrie, who won in 1999 and 2012, also competed in the inaugural tournament and will make his 18th appearance this month, having only missed the event in 2000 and 2003. The Scot is one of three two-time winners of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters along with Adam Scott (2002, 2008) and Branden Grace (2015, 2016).

Young Dane Thorbjørn Olesen will be looking to go one better than his runner-up finish in last year’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. The 27 year old is in fine form, having lifted two trophies in November at the Turkish Airlines Open and three weeks later with Søren Kjeldsen in Australia where he secure Denmark’s first-ever win at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.

“I feel like I’m getting closer and closer to winning the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters so it would be nice to go one step further and win this time,” said Olesen, who shared second with Rafa Cabrera Bello in last year’s tournament, having tied for third with the Spaniard in 2014.

Cabrera-Bello enjoyed arguably his best-ever year in 2016, finishing eighth on The Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex and shone on his debut at both the Olympic Games and The Ryder Cup.

This month, the 32 year old will compete in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters for an eighth straight year as he endeavours to emulate compatriots Sergio Garcia (2014) and Alvaro Quiros (2009) by lifting the Mother of Pearl Trophy.

Cabrera-Bello has already come close on three occasions, finishing joint runner-up last January after tieing for third in 2011 and 2014, the year he missed out on the playoff between Garcia and Mikko Ilonen by one shot.

“I definitely feel like I can win the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, I have been very close in the past. I really like the course at Doha Golf Club and I know I can play well on it,” said Cabrera-Bello, who last month teed off his 2017 European Tour season by finishing runner-up at the UBS Hong Kong Open, after leading for the first three days.

I’m always comfortable playing in Qatar as the weather is so similar to the Canary Islands where I come from. It’s sunny, there’s usually a nice breeze and it’s quite cool, so I really feel at home. The fans are nice and there’s always a relaxed atmosphere.

The field also includes 2013 champion Chris Wood, his 2016 Ryder Cup teammate Andy Sullivan, and in-form World Number Ten Alex Noren, who won four European Tour titles last year.
