Luiten maintains impressive form

Joost Luiten was pleased with his week's work as he continued a rich vein of form with a second-placed finish at the  Real Club Valderrama Open de España, Hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

The Dutchman came into the final round one shot off the lead and was in a share of top spot at the turn alongside eventual winner Andrew Johnston.

Luiten could not quite kick on on the back nine, however, recording eight pars with a bogey on the 11th to finish one shot behind the Englishman at two over.

Despite that disappointment, Luiten secured his fifth top ten in eight events so far this season as he bounces back from a 50th-placed finish on The Race to Dubai last term -  his lowest since 2009.

“Second is never bad,” he said. “I made a couple of mistakes to win down the stretch on the back nine. Didn't hit them close enough to really make birdies, and the mistake on 11, the bogey on 11 felt like it might have been the game changer.

“I've had a solid week and I'm playing solid in tough conditions so I'm happy with the way I played and the way I hung in there today.

“I had a good start, my putter was going nicely in the first five, six holes, rolling in a couple of par putts and birdie putts, and then after that I didn't really hit them close enough to make birdies, and that's what I had to do towards the end there.

“I hit a poor shot into 17, chickened out a bit, but it was a good week.”
