Lorenzo-Vera targeting emotional victory in the mountains

Mike Lorenzo-Vera fired a brilliant 64 to put himself right in contention for a first European Tour title at the Omega European Masters.

The Frenchman recovered from an early bogey with seven birdies to sit just two shots behind leader Matthew Fitzpatrick heading into the final round at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club.

It was his lowest round since the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open, where he lost a play-off to Joakim Lagergren and struggled to hold back the tears in his post-round interview.

A win in the Swiss Alps would be emotional for more reason than one after Lorenzo-Vera's father passed away while his son was playing a previous edition of this event, and the 33 year old admits this is the one he wants to win.

“It might be the most important tournament for me,” he said. “I lost my dad here, so I want it.”

Lorenzo-Vera has finished in the top 30 in all four seasons that he has finished the tournament and he is hoping familiarity - plus a change in his putting technique - can bring glory at the 167th attempt.

“I was striking the ball pretty good and, as I said yesterday, I know what to do here on almost every hole,” he said. “So I am trying to do it and that’s it.

“I have been working on mostly on being square, not too much feeling, and putting really square even if I was feeling bad.

“That is what Justin, my coach told me. He was like, “We don’t care if you feel uncomfortable or not, just be square and that’s it!”, and it looks like it works.”
