A stunning eagle at the 18th handed Eduardo de la Riva a share of the first round lead at the D+D REAL Czech Masters.

After reaching the turn in 34, the Spaniard caught fire on the back nine, firing birdies on the tenth, 11th and 12th before closing his round with an eagle at the last to join playing partner Renato Paratore at the top of the leaderboard.

De la Riva bounced back from a bogey at the second with three gains in six holes as he covered the front nine in 34.

The 33 year old picked up three shots in a row after the turn and safely parred the next five holes to head to the 18th on five under par.

And De la Riva holed his long-range approach at the last to finish the opening day on seven under par.

He said: “It is very good to finish with a two on a par four, especially on this 18th hole which is very difficult.

"I didn’t have to take a putt on the 18th, so it is a very good finish. It is perfection.

"I played very well in Denmark for the first two rounds and then at the weekend, on the greens I putted very badly.

"I feel good. Today I putted well and the long and short game were good too. It is a nice course and nice weather. The course is in good condition.

“Renato and I are friends. He is a very good young player and it is nice to play with him.”

Paratore, 18, carded seven birdies on his way to a flawless 65, his best score on The European Tour to date.

The Italian youngster, who very nearly shot a hole in one at the 16th, was thrilled with his score. He said: "Today I played really solid from the tee to the green and on the back nine I putted really well.

"So I’m happy with a 65. It is my best round on The European Tour. Renato Paratore

"My irons were good today and I gave myself a lot of chances. I made five birdies on the back nine and made a lot of putts.

"The first eight tournaments I played really well but then I dropped a bit the last three months. Then from Austria I changed my swing and I’m playing better.

"It was nice playing with Eduardo too and he had a great finish."

Early clubhouse leaders Matt Fitzpatrick and Sam Hutsby sit a shot further back on six under alongside Pelle Edberg and Thomas Pieters.

Edberg carded seven birdies and a bogey in his opening round, and he was pleased to produce such a low total.

He said: "It’s a very nice start. I read the greens pretty good today and holed some putts.

"I didn’t play very well but it is a great score and we are off to a good start."

Pieters started brightly, picking up four shots in his first seven holes before carding three further birdies and a bogey on the back nine.

He said: "I’m very happy. I drove it really well, which I’ve been struggling with lately. I’ve not played much.

"Last week I got better during the week so I’m happy to carry that on here. I struck it well, hit it long which gave me a lot of wedges into the greens and gave myself some chances.

"This course is good for me – I can take it over a lot of bunkers which excites me."
