Langer to miss the Masters through injury

Former European Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer will miss next month’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National and be out of action for two months after undergoing surgery on his left thumb.

Langer required repair of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpal joint on the left thumb for an injury suffered from a biking accident and will be out of action for approximately eight weeks as he works through the necessary rehabilitation and training schedule.

“Bernhard underwent a successful surgical repair and has recovered well from the procedure,” said Dr. Andrew Weiland of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. “He will remain immobilised in a splint for five weeks, and will begin range of motion exercises afterwards. It is anticipated that he will return to golfing activities in approximately eight weeks. A full recovery is expected.”

The 53 year old German said: “I’m obviously disappointed that the injury occurred, but especially disappointed with such an important part of my schedule coming up, including the Masters. I do, however, appreciate the fine care of Dr Weiland and his team and will work hard to recover.”
