Langer surges into Masters contention

Jordan Spieth saw his lead cut to just one shot as 58 year old Bernhard Langer made a remarkable charge up the leaderboard in the third round of the Masters Tournament.

Saturday had been billed as a contest between Spieth and Rory McIlroy as the defending champion led the World Number Three by just one shot with the duo going out in the last group of the day.

But with Spieth playing his first 12 holes in level par to stay four under as McIlroy dropped five shots, Langer posted a 70 to sit just three shots off the lead.

Hideki Matsuyama was one shot behind the leader through 14 holes, with Smylie Kaufman a further shot back.

Dustin Johnson was then alongside Langer with two to play, a shot clear of Søren Kjeldsen, Danny Willett and World Number One Jason Day.

Spieth extended his lead to three shots with a birdie on the second and, while he dropped a shot on the seventh after finding the sand, he bounced back with a birdie to stay well in control.

Langer was level par through 12 holes but then birdied three in a row and when Spieth double-bogeyed after a chip and three putts on the 11th, the two-time champion was just a shot back.

Spieth bounced back with a birdie on the 12th after an excellent tee-shot and, when Langer dropped a shot on the last, the gap was three shots.

Matsuyama was a picture of consistency with three birdies and a bogey in his round so far, while Kaufman birded three of his last six to post the low round of the day with a 69.

Day recorded a 71 playing alongside Langer while Willett and Kjeldsen had three and five holes to play respectively.

McIlroy bogeyed the third, seventh and tenth and, when he found the water at the 11th to double-bogey he was six shots off the lead.

Lee Westwood was in the group at one over after coming home in 32 to record a 71.
