Langer gets season off to a flier in America

Bernhard Langer got his season off to a winning start on the US Champions Tour as the German claimed a three-shot victory over fellow Senior Open Champion Fred Couples and Jeff Sluman at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.

Langer, who will be hoping to repeat his feat of 2010 when he returns to the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Royal Porthcawl this July, carded a second successive eight under par round of 64 to finish on 22 under par and earn his 19th Champions Tour victory in Hawai'i.

“It's a new year and my goal was to get over the hurdle and win as soon as possible,” said Langer, who won the same event back in 2009. “I'm very pleased and extremely blessed to play golf like this. To be 22 under doesn't happen very often.”

Langer, who finished second behind Tom Lehman in last year’s Champions Tour rankings, has now moved to the top after the opening event of the 2014 season.

The 2012 Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex winner, Couples, carded six birdies on the way to a five under final round of 67 to finish alongside Sluman on 19 under par.
