Langer denied title defence by Triplett

Bernhard Langer came within a shot of successfully defending the ACE Group Classic title he won a year ago after a bogey at the last saw him narrowly miss out against America’s Kirk Triplett.

Coming off a 19th Champions Tour title just last month at the season opening event in Hawaii, Langer shot rounds of 64-70-67 to finish at 15 under par and give himself a chance at a third title in four years at the event held on TwinEagles' Talon Course.

However a stray second shot while tied for the lead on the 18th hole put the German in trouble, and when he failed to convert from 12 feet for his par he handed the title to Triplett who picked up a third Champions Tour title of his own.

Langer may have missed out on a 20th title the other side of the pond, but this latest result continued a run of form that has seen the 56 year old finish in the top ten in 38 of the last 47 Champions Tour events.

Colin Montgomerie also fared well this past week on America’s West Coast, posting his second top ten in as many events this season, finishing in a tie for sixth at ten under par.

Just a few shots further back was Australia’s Peter Senior who finished in a tie for 11th at seven under, while England’s Roger Chapman finished in a share of 23rd spot, a shot better than Chien Soon Lu.
