Koepka leads but Tiger on the prowl

Brooks Koepka extended his lead to three shots but Tiger Woods was on the charge as the leaders got under way in the final round of the US PGA Championship.

A birdie on the first moved two-time defending US Open champion Koepka to 13 under after three holes but the roars reverberating around Bellerive Country Club were for Woods, who moved into second after two birdies in his first four.

Defending champion Justin Thomas was also ten under after six holes, a shot clear of Spaniard Jon Rahm, Australian duo Adam Scott and Jason Day, and American Rickie Fowler.

14-time Major Championship winner Woods is looking to end a ten-year drought in golf's four biggest events, while Koepka is looking to become the first player to win the US Open and US PGA Championship in the same season since Woods himself in 2000.

Woods was completely dialled-in with his irons in the early stages, putting an approach to seven feet on the first but missing his birdie putt.

He made no such mistake on the second as he holed from four feet and when he put his tee-shot on the par-three third to half that distance, he was into double-figures and just two back.

That was soon three back, however, as Koepka rolled home an eight-footer on the opener to extend his advantage.

Thomas had hit a beautiful approach into the first for a birdie and he made another on the fifth from eight feet to join Woods - who made a smart par save on the fourth - in second.

An 18-footer from Day on the second moved him to nine under and he was joined there by Scott when his countryman bogeyed the first.

Rahm and Fowler were both level for the day after three holes.

Playing partners Rafa Cabrera Bello and Tyrrell Hatton had five birdies apiece and no bogeys in their first 16 holes to surge to eight under alongside Shane Lowry, Thomas Pieters, Chez Reavie and Gary Woodland.
