Knox off to a flier at stormy Firestone

Russell Knox made a brilliant start to take a two-shot lead before play was suspended due to bad weather on day two of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The start of play had been delayed by 45 minutes on a stormy morning at Firestone Country Club and just two hours and 14 minutes of golf was possible before the hooter sounded to bring the players off at 10.29am local time.

During that time Knox had made a birdie-birdie-birdie start to get to seven under after four holes and leapfrog overnight leader Thomas Pieters who was playing his first hole when play was stopped.

American Jimmy Walker - who will defend his US PGA Championship title next week - made two birdies in his first three holes to get to four under, a shot clear of World Number Four Rory McIlroy, England's Ross Fisher and recently crowned Champion Golfer of the Year Jordan Spieth.

Knox became the first Scotsman to win a World Golf Championships event at the 2015 WGC-HSBC Champions and got off to a blistering start on day two in Ohio.

He birdied the first after an approach to five feet and holed a putt from similar range to take advantage of the par five next. A ten-footer on the third moved him to seven under before he parred the fourth.

Walker had birdies on the second and third, while Fisher birdied the second and bogeyed the third in his first three holes.

Playing partners McIlroy and Spieth had both parred the first to sit a shot ahead of a group containing Jon Rahm, who was one over for the day after six holes.
