England's Simon Khan, ranked 471st in the Official World Golf Ranking and called into the event only on Monday, had a chance to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club after bursting into the final round lead.
Five under par for the first 15 holes, last November's Qualifying School winner had leapt from joint 13th into a one stroke advantage with three to play.
Khan, runner-up in 2006, was six under par, while overnight leader Chris Wood, fellow Englishman Luke Donald and Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed all stood five under after eight, nine and 16 holes respectively.
Wood, two ahead when he resumed, threw the title race wide open with a double bogey six on the third, taking two to get out of a greenside bunker.
Robert Karlsson, who shot a course record 62 on Saturday, bogeyed the third and fifth and slipped back to joint fifth on four under.
Donald took over at the top when he birdied the 11th after Khan had bogeyed the 16th.
But when Khan sank a 20 footer on the last that fell in from the back edge of the hole they were locked together at six under.
Andersson Hed had also birdied the last, but Khan's putt ended his hopes.
