Sung-hoon Kang raced into a three shot lead as the second round of the Maybank Malaysian Open began in Kuala Lumpur.

The 27 year old Korean, who plies his trade on the co-sanctioning Asian Tour, had been one behind Ryder Cup stars Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood following an opening 67.

Kang birdied Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s opening hole to tie the lead, then added further gains at the third, fifth and eighth to reach nine under for the week.

That was three clear of not only afternoon starters McDowell and Westwood, but also England’s Paul Waring.

Waring, who had an ace at the 15th during his opening 69, mixed four birdies with a single bogey over his opening 14 holes.

Ireland’s Peter Lawrie, Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo, Malaysia’s Danny Chia and English pair Richard Bland and Tommy Fleetwood were tied for fifth on five under.
