Former European Tour and European Senior Tour player José Avelino Cabo Tuero died on Sunday, February 14, at the age of 69 after illness.
Known on tour as José Cabo, he was born on April 19, 1946 in Castiello de Bernueces in Oviedo. He turned professional in 1963 and assumed the roles of assistant teacher and professional at El Saler.
In the Valencian countryside he spent most of his career as a player and greenkeeper, and also took time between his tournaments, on both the European Tour and Senior Tour, to teach Manuel Calero as well as Fiji’s Vijay Singh, who went on to win three Major titles.
For many months, Singh lived with Pepin, as he was known among his friends, and practised in the field of El Saler.
His best season on the Senior Tour came in 1998 when he claimed two top tens, after graduating from the Senior Tour Qualifying School for a second consecutive year.
One of his finest moments in the European Tour came when he finished fifth in the 1976 Madrid Open.
A couple of years ago, Cabo suffered back problems which prevented him from walking. Before Christmas his condition worsened in Gijon, where he stayed during the Christmas holidays, and he was admitted to hospital before moving back to Valencia. He died on the morning of February 14 after complications with his illness.
The European Tour, the Professional Golf Association of Spain and the whole golfing family sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.
