The pair shot six under par rounds of 66 to lie a shot clear of 2003 Open Champion Ben Curtis.

Jones got off to an impressive start with an eagle at the par five second and went on to pick up five birdies, with a bogey five at the 12th the only dropped shot.

McNeill carded six birdies in a bogey-free round to join Jones at the top of the leaderboard.

His fellow American Curtis shot five birdies in his 67.

A group of four players, Jeff Overton, Kevin Kisner, Todd Hamilton and Daniel Summerhays, were a shot further back on four under.
