Johnson returns to winning ways

Dustin Johnson overcame compatriots J B Holmes and Bubba Watson to win the WGC-Cadillac Championship and record his first victory since taking a six-month break from the sport.

American Johnson overturned a five shot deficit in the final round by carding a closing 69 to finish nine under par at Trump National Doral: one shot ahead of overnight leader Holmes, who struggled to a 75.

Holmes had seen his five shot lead turn into a two shot deficit in the space of seven holes due to three early bogeys and four birdies from double Masters Tournament champion Bubba Watson.

But as Watson faded with three bogeys on the back nine to eventually finish third, it was Johnson who took advantage with birdies on the eighth, tenth and 15th to move into a lead he would not relinquish.

"It means everything," Johnson said. "It's been a tough road but a really good one. A lot of really great things came out of it, my son, me and Paulina (his wife) are doing great....it just feels awesome to get that 'W'. I played great today.

"I knew I was really good. I just knew there was something that I was missing that could make myself great. I have really been working hard on that and I think it's working right now.

"I'm so excited right now I can hardly talk. It feels great and it's definitely by far the best one (victory).

“After a long layoff, to come back out and win in my fifth start means a lot. I've been working hard on my game and been working hard on me, and so it means a great deal to have some success right out of the gate. It gives me a lot of confidence, too.

“This being my first win as a dad, definitely, is the most special. Paulina and Tatum were waiting for me when I got done - that was the best part of the day for sure.

“It's hard to describe, but just from the first day he's born, your perspective on life completely changes. Things that were important aren't important anymore; he's the only thing that's really important, and being there for him and being a role model for him.

“It makes life a lot easier I think, because there's just one thing that's all you think about.  It definitely simplifies stuff.”

Henrik Stenson’s 72 ensured the Swede finished the week as top European in a share of fourth with Adam Scott, whilst Louis Oosthuizen finished in sixth place on three under par to record his best result in the tournament.

Stenson said: "I came here with some questions, and I think I got quite a lot of answers, most of them positives. There are a few things to go home and work on. But especially on the back nine, I felt like I picked up some pace compared to yesterday.

"Yesterday was more of a battle. Today I think I played a bit better towards the end and hit some nice shots coming in, even though in these conditions on this golf course, it's always a little bit of a struggle and you have to grind it out on the odd occasion. I finished pretty strong and got a good result in the end, so I'm pretty pleased with the week."

World Number One Rory McIlroy chipped in at the last for a double bogey, 72, and a share of ninth.

McIlroy has just one tournament left before attempting to complete the career grand slam by winning the Masters, and will play practice rounds at Augusta National next week with his father Gerry and some friends, including New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

"I'll just be trying to hit shots that I need," he told reporters. "I'll be hitting a lot of draws, or trying to hit a lot of draws, anyway."
