Joburg Open day one - What they said

Paul Peterson fired a stunning 62 on the West Course to lead the Joburg Open on day one before the heavens opened to halt play midway through the afternoon at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

Here, we take a look at what some of those trying to chase down the American had to say after their first rounds.

Aaron Rai (65 - East Course, -7)

"It was a very good start. I played very solidly. Also, pretty damp conditions and the course played very long so it was important to hit fairways and greens. I made some putts, also. I drove it well, hit a few greens, made a few putts and also made a couple of up-and-downs when needed, so it was really solid throughout, really."

Dean Burmester (66 - West Course, -5)

"It was pretty good. Starting on the West, you kind of expect to get a good round in and play nicely and score well because we know the East plays a couple of shots tougher. The weather hasn't been great leading up to the week and we were lucky enough to play. I got through 17 and nearly the full 18 with no rain so I'm pretty happy. I think driving it well is a big key and from there just giving yourself a chance at as many birdies as you can."

Teaghan Gauche (66 - West Course, -5)

"I think it's a solid start. I was happy with five under. Conditions were, obviously, a little wet but I think with the preferred lies I made do and the rest of the course is looking great. The greens really hold so if you putt well you can make some really nice putts. Since I have only played the course once before, it wasn't ideal. Obviously with the pre-qualifying, leading up to yesterday and not getting a practice round in, that was just the way it was. I had to make peace with it and go through the course in my head the best way I remembered it. I just had to do my mental prep, that's pretty much it."
