Joburg Open - Day 1 in numbers

The Joburg Open brings to an end a three-tournament South African swing on The European Tour. The largest field of the season teed it up at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club for today's opening round. Here's the best facts and figures from the first round.

65- The low round of the day from Justin Walters. The South African regained his Tour card at Qualifying School last November and has already shown good form in 2016, finishing in the top five at last week's BMW SA Open.

10 - This year marks the tenth Joburg Open, which started in 2007. So far only Richard Sterne (2008 and 2013) and Charl Schwartzel (2010 and 2011) have won the title more than once.

210- Professional golfers in the field this week. Tied for the largest field ever on The European Tour.

99 - Of the 210 players broke par during the opening round.

2- Courses are used at the Joburg Open. Players play one round on the East Course and one round on the West Course at Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club. Following a 36-hole cut, the final two rounds take place over the East Course.

30 - Different nationalities represented in the field. South Africa have the largest contingent with 101 players.

3.49- The East Course played almost three and half shots harder, comparatively, than the West Course. The par 72 East Course played to an average of 68.37 (or -3.63) whilst the West yielded an average of just 70.86 (or -0.14).

23- Eagles were made during the opening round. England's Max Orrin was the only player who made two, at the first and eighth hole on the East Course.

179 - The distance in yards of Ross McGowan's hole in one on the fifth hole of the East Course today.

24- Years between the age of Brandon Stone (22) and Ernie Els (46). The two South African's played together today for the first time.

72 - Level par round for George Coetzee. The three-time European Tour winner played his first competitive round since August, when the South African inured his ankle.

8- Bogey free rounds on day one.
