Miguel Angel Jiménez is adamant that fatigue will not prevent him from challenging at this week’s Czech Open.
The Spaniard, who co-designed both courses at Prosper Golf Resort in Čeladná, the Czech Republic, has spent the last two weeks in America, firstly at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and latterly at last week’s US PGA Championship.
But whilst acknowledging that the stifling heat and humidity in Atlanta took its toll on him physically, Jiménez is determined to live up to his billing as the pre-tournament favourite.
He said: “I was a little bit tired when I arrived after a long flight from America, and I’m still feeling a bit jet-lagged It was very hot and humid in America, so that tires you out even more. But you never know what can happen. I will give it my best shot – that’s all you can do.
“I’m feeling much better now, and I’m ready to play well. I would love to win this tournament, but there are a lot of good players here, so I’m going to have to play well.”
By his own admission Jiménez has suffered a dip in form of late, largely due to a cold putter, but the 47 year old is hopeful of rediscovering his touch on the immaculate greens at Prosper Golf Resort.
He said: “I started quite well at the start of the year, but lately I’ve been struggling with the putter. But hopefully I can turn it around this week.
“It’s just important to play as well as you can, whenever you tee up. You have to keep your concentration levels high, otherwise you’re going to struggle. I’m looking for consistency above all. If I play consistently but don’t win, I’m still happy.”
The Ryder Cup star finished seventh in this event last year, and is confident of mounting another bold bid on ‘home’ soil, especially if the weather holds.
“It feels very nice to be back, especially as the sun is shining,” said Jiménez. “It feels like being at home in this weather!
“I feel proud to have helped design this course. The countryside around here is beautiful, with the mountains in the background. Considering the amount of rain we had on Monday night, the golf course is in very good condition, especially the greens.
“I’m really looking forward to the week. Hopefully I can play well, and everyone enjoys playing this tournament on this fantastic course.”
