The European Tour’s oldest winner had complained of feeling under the weather during his opening 67, although that had not prevented him dancing on the fairway after holing his approach to the ninth for eagle.

And the 51 year old Spaniard was full of beans again on Friday, birdieing five of his first 12 holes to race to ten under par at Black Mountain Golf Club.

That put him two ahead of first round leader Michael Hoey, who was among the afternoon starters following his course record 64 on day one, and Canada’s Richard T Lee.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat was leading the home challenge on seven under, with England’s Tome Lewis, Spain’s Carlos Pigem and Australian Nathan Holman alongside him.
