Jiménez falters as Senior Open race hots up

Miguel Angel Jiménez lost his four-stroke overnight lead as he reached the turn in his final round at The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex.

Jiménez, aiming to win the veterans’ version of the Claret Jug, began the final round with that healthy cushion and looked comfortable after a birdie at the sixth hole. However, as American Scott McCarron and Sweden’s Magnus Atlevi launched a charge from the pack, Jiménez began to falter.

He dropped a stroke at the ninth then compounded the problem at the next as his second shot found the burn and he ran up a double-bogey six.

Suddenly, three shots had gone in the space of two holes and Jiménez was back at nine under par, alongside playing partner, Paul Broadhurst, and one behind Atlevi and McCarron.

McCarron, who started the day six behind the Spaniard, picked up four birdies after 11 holes while the Swede, attempting to follow Alex Noren and Henrik Stenson into the winner’s enclosure, had nine birdies and two bogeys in his first 15 holes.

Three-time champion Tom Watson won the Fred Daly for the best finish by a golfer over the age of 60 by shooting a closing 71 for a one over par total of 289.
