Miguel Angel Jiménez carded back-to-back rounds of 68 at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, leading the European charge as he cut short Jerry Kelly’s lead to one shot.
The Spaniard continued his impressive start at The Broadmoor with a bogey-free two under par round of 68 to put pressure on American Kelly as he goes in search of his second Senior Major Championship.
The 54 year old claimed the Regions Tradition title in May and is eyeing up the chance to claim his second Major in as many months as he sits one shot behind in second place.
“It was very good golf. The way I played today was very solid,” he said. “A lot of chances for birdies and I only missed two fairways, but I managed to put the ball on the green.
“I missed only one green on number one where I pulled it with my wedge and then I made a recovery on that one. It's good. I played very well, very solid from tee to green and I had a good time.”
Fellow Staysure Tour member Philip Golding shot an eye-catching round of 67, three under par, to move into a share of fourth place. The Englishman and two-time winner on the over-50s circuit in 2017 holed three successive birdies on his front nine before he returned to the clubhouse in level par.
“It was a good day. 67 around that course and anything under par is always good,” Golding said. “Yesterday was a struggle, but I managed to get around in two-over. The weather this morning wasn't so gusty. It wasn't as windy, and my short game was in good form.
“I wasn’t hitting the ball particularly well, but my short game and putting was good.”
Paul Broadhurst, who won the KitchenAid PGA Seniors Championship in May, and tops the Staysure Tour Order of Merit shot a level par round of 70 to sit tied tenth as part of the chasing European pack.
