Jarrod Lyle passes away aged 36

A chorus of golfers from around the world have joined thousands of other well-wishers in sending heartfelt tributes to the family of Jarrod Lyle after news broke that the Australian passed away after a long battle with cancer.

The 36 year old had been fighting cancer for a third time following a recurrence of acute myeloid leukemia last year, and after his condition deteriorated in hospital recently – affecting his eyesight and speech – Lyle decided to stop receiving cancer treatment and began palliative care.

Golfers, friends and many other notable figures took to social media to express their sadness after hearing about Lyle’s condition and death.

Lyle was first diagnosed with leukemia as a teenager in 1999 and after beating it relapsed in 2012. The Australian fought back courageously to return to play professional golf, and in 2016 he made the first hole-in-one of the European Tour season at the Australian PGA Championship – acing the par three fifth at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Throughout his golfing career Lyle was known for his prowess from the tee on par threes. In 2011 he made a hole-in-one at the iconic 16th at TPC Scottsdale in the Waste Management Phoenix Open – a hole famously aced by Tiger Woods in 1997.

Four years later Lyle hit the headlines for making two aces in a charity match in Melbourne, Australia – an event which raised funds for children's cancer causes.

Jarrod will be sorely missed by the golfing community.
