Janzen overhauls Montgomerie in Florida

Former US Open Champion Lee Janzen defeated compatriot Bart Bryant in a play-off to win the ACE Group Classic at TwinEagles Golf Club after reining in long-time leader Colin Montgomerie.

European Senior Tour Number One Montgomerie, who was gunning for a third victory on the US PGA Champions Tour, started the final day one shot clear but a closing 72 saw the 51 year old finish in fifth place - four shots outside the play-off mark set by Bryant, who fired a course record 62 on Sunday, and Janzen (67).

After both finished with an aggregate total of 16 under par, a par four at the first additional hole proved enough for 50 year old Minnesota native Janzen to seize his maiden Champions Tour title while Montgomerie was left to rue a rollercoaster final round which had started with much promise.

Two-time Senior Major winner Montgomerie, who carded consecutive rounds of 66 to take control of the tournament through two days, immediately doubled his overnight advantage with an opening birdie in Naples but failed to continue his challenge as three bogeys on the back nine proved costly.

Bryant eagled the par four first and added a further five gains in a blistering front nine 29 while three more birdies on the way home secured the Texan a place in the play-off with Janzen, who forced his way back into the mix with a closing birdie before claiming the win in the sudden-death shoot-out.

Montgomerie will now head back to British shores to play a part in selecting Europe's next Ryder Cup Captain alongside fellow skippers Jose Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley in a panel completed by European Tour Chief Executive George O'Grady and Tournament Committee member David Howell.
