Iron man Aguilar switches focus back to golf

Felipe Aguilar's all-round game has made him into one of the most consistent performers on The European Tour in recent years, but the multi-talented Chilean revealed he has even more strings to his bow this week.

Opening rounds of 67-65 moved the two-time European Tour winner into a share of second place at the halfway stage of the Joburg Open after some unconventional preparation.

Aguilar was playing in his first event since the season-opening Alfred Dunhill Championship after taking part in an iron-man triathlon over the festive break.

"I was doing an iron-man, so this week was a very easy week and I didn't know what was going to happen and it actually worked about pretty well," he said. "I feel pretty good, I feel very comfortable, very healthy, which is the only thing I was hoping for this week.

"Speaking to my doctors I had to take some measures as soon as I finished, like an IV straight into the veins, trying to hydrate again, a pool of ice, things like that. A lot of water, relax, massage after 48 hours. I had to do everything the way they wanted actually and it worked out pretty well.

Even though I had that race last week I was practising pretty much every day last week early in the morning and I was doing the iron-man training in the afternoon, but it was awesome - Felipe Aguilar

"I think every single time that you do something that you really want to do with happiness, it works out pretty well."

And while the 41 year old enjoyed his foray into the daunting 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run, he is now going to return his full focus on the slightly less arduous pursuit of life on The European Tour.

"Golf is a lot easier health-wise than the triathlon," he said. "That was something really extreme for me, it was an amazing experience, but it takes a little bit too much time from golf, so I'll put that aside and I'm going to wait a couple more years until I do another one.

"It's been great and this week, I was hoping to have something like this and it worked out well."
