Irish trio disappointed at early exits

Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy expressed their disappointment at missing the halfway cut at The Masters Tournament.

The Irish trio all came to Augusta National with high hopes but respective scores of five over, seven over and five over saw them all miss out on the weekend action at the season's first Major.

"I didn't play very well yesterday and did well to shot the score and it was kind of the opposite today - I played well and didn't score," said Harrington.

"It was tough today, the pins were very tough and I got on to the back foot and tried to go after them. I never had the luxury of making mistakes today and a couple of holes got away from me. It is a bad time to play like that given the week that it is, it just didn't go for me this week."

McIlroy was despondent after his second round 77, saying: "I am just not myself at the moment and this is the sort of golf course that makes your mistakes look even worse when you are slightly off.

"But I just didn't play well. I am disappointed but I have a couple of weeks now to work on it and try and get it back. I don't know what is going on: I just need to take a bit of a break and come back with a refreshed attitude."

McDowell said: "I am frustrated because I played well enough today to make that cut and my game is there or thereabouts but my short game really let me down this week.

"This golf course is a brutal test and the pins are a lot more treacherous today and if you get in the wrong side in this place it will bite you hard. I walk away learning more and more about this place every year, but my short game needs to improve if I want to go up a gear."
