RSM presents the second episode from an all-new series shining a light on key roles and personalities on the European Tour, this time starring Paul Lawrie as he revisits Carnoustie 19 years on from his Open Championship triumph.

RSM Presents...The Champion - Paul Lawrie

July 19, 1999 was the defining day of Lawrie’s career and a day that has since gone down in golfing folklore, so dramatic was the manner of his victory in golf’s oldest, and most revered, competition.

Having overcome Final Qualifying to take his place in the starting field of the 128th Open Championship, the Scot never looked back.

Despite starting the day ten shots off the lead, he would card a 67 in the final round and watch on anxiously as Jean van de Velde triple-bogeyed the 72nd hole to set up a three-way, four-hole playoff.

After birdieing the 17th hole for the second time on that final day, Paul stepped up on the 18th to hit the shot of his life, finishing just five feet from the hole. It was a moment that remains to this day one of the most iconic in Major Championship golf.

On what will always be hallowed turf to the Aberdonian, Lawrie discusses the resilience and clarity of thought he exhibited when it mattered most, and the strange sense of calm and confidence he experienced under the upmost pressure.

Nearly two decades on, the memory of that day and the impact the win had on his life is still as vivid as ever for Paul Lawrie,The Champion
