In Numbers: a Review of South African events in 2014

After a record eight events held on South African soil so far in the 2014 season, we take a look back at the key numbers that made for such exciting action.

264 - The lowest winning 72 hole total by Thomas Aiken at the Africa Open.

61 - The lowest 18 hole score set by John Hahn at the Africa Open (also the lowest of the season to date).

8 -The record number of European Tour events to be staged in South Africa for a single season.

2 - The number of first-time winners. They were: Morten Ørum Madsen (South African Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni) and George Coetzee (Joburg Open). Also the number of successful defences by Charl Schwartzel (Alfred Dunhill Championship) and Louis Oosthuizen (Volvo Golf Champions)

5 - The number of South African winners from the eight events staged in the country. They were: Charl Schwartzel (Alfred Dunhill Championship), Dawie Van der Walt (Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa), Louis Oosthuizen (Volvo Golf Champions), George Coetzee (Joburg Open) and Thomas Aiken (Africa Open). Also the number of consecutive South African winners in both the Joburg Open and Africa Open.

4 - The largest winning margin by Charl Schwartzel at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. Also, the largest final round comeback by a winner by George Coetzee (Joburg Open) and Thomas Aiken (Africa Open) and the number of holes-in-one from the eight tournaments.

137 - The lowest cut of five under at the Africa Open.

9 - The biggest jump from the cut-line by Warren Abery (Alfred Dunhill Championship) and Keith Horne (Africa Open).

5-With his victory in the Volvo Golf Champions, Louis Oosthuizen went to the top of the category for most consecutive winning years on The European Tour.

7,964 - The yardage of the Tshwane Open, now the longest course in European Tour history.

 1 - The first European Tour wins on South African soil for Thomas Björn (Nedbank Golf Challenge) and Ross Fisher (Tshwane Open), and the number of play-offs, which featured Thomas Aiken who beat Oliver Fisher at the Africa Open.

3 -The most number of top ten finishes in South African events, by Thomas Aiken and Ross Fisher.

66– The fewest number to make the 36 hole cut, at the South African Open Championship hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni.

20-The lowest winning total in relation to par, set by Thomas Björn (Nedbank Golf Challenge), Thomas Aiken (Africa Open) and Ross Fisher (Tshwane Open).

37 -After the eight events this season, the total number of South African victories in tournaments co-sanctioned between The European and Sunshine Tours.
