Paul Lawrie closed in on top spot at the Omega European Masters to boost his chances of recording back to back European Tour victories.
The 43 year old Scot, winner of last week’s Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles and a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup Team, picked up five birdies on the front nine during his second round at Crans-sur-Sierre.
At seven under, he was one behind England’s Danny Willett, who carded a second successive 67, and well placed to challenge for another title.
Willett, another recent champion at June's BMW International Open, was satisfied with his efforts today.
“All in all it was a good day. You can never complain about a 67.
“My all round game is there or thereabouts. I’m driving the ball really well and my distance control is very good ... so if I can get a bit more consistency on the greens, I should be in for a good weekend.”
Tommy Fleetwood and David Howell were a stroke behind Lawrie in third, the former having recorded seven birdies today in a 66.
“I've hardly put a foot wrong,” said Fleetwood. “It was so stress-free - I couldn't have shot any worse than five under.”
A host of players remained in close contention, with the top 25 separated by just four shots.
Among those at four under was overnight leader Grégory Bourdy; he followed his sublime opening 63 with a round of 75 containing five bogeys, including four in a row from the tenth.
