In-form Ilonen edges ahead

Finland’s Mikko Ilonen turned one ahead of home favourite Alex Noren and overnight leader Matteo Manassero during the third round of the Nordea Masters in Sweden.

A runner-up in China and Morocco recently, in-form Ilonen started the day two behind Manassero.

However, the Italian, fresh from becoming the youngest BMW PGA Champion last weekend, had to wait until the ninth hole for his first birdie and only turned in a level par 36 as a result.

Ilonen surpassed him with a birdie from 12 feet at the second and further gains at the sixth and ninth.

At 14 under he was one ahead of not only Manassero, but also 2011 winner Noren, who renewed his love affair with Bro Hof Slott.

The 30 year old holed an incredible 80 foot putt at the fourth for one of four birdies and eagled the ninth after a sublime fairway wood approach to feet.

Another Swede, Jonas Blixt, was fourth on 11 under, while earlier Bernd Wiesberger carded a brilliant eight under par 64 to reach ten under par.

Noren edged ahead with birdies at the consecutive par fives 12 and 13, but Ilonen matched the latter of those to tie them on 15 under.

Manassero also had a routine gain at the 13th to be one only one behind approaching the closing holes.
