Iberdrola to power up Open Cala Millor Mallorca

Iberdrola, Spain’s leading energy company and the world’s largest producer of wind power, will be the title sponsors of the first edition of the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca from May 13-16.

Iberdrola’s commitment to the event, which will be played at Pula Golf Club in Son Severa, Mallorca, Spain, is a sign of the company’s growing emergence in the energy market.

The inaugural Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca is one of six Spanish stops on The 2010 European Tour International Schedule, with tournaments also being played on the mainland in Malaga (won last month by South African Louis Oosthuizen), Seville (from April 29-May 2), Madrid (May 27-30), Valencia (October 21-24) and Sotogrande (October 28-31).

Leading home hopes entered for the €800,000 event include Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, José Manuel Lara, Pablo Larrazabal and Pablo Martin, who between them have captured nine European Tour titles.

The Spanish boast an impressive record at the José Maria Olazábal-designed Pula Golf Club, which hosted the Mallorca Classic on five occasions.

Ryder Cup stars Miguel Angel Jiménez, Sergio Garcia and course designer Olazábal triumphed there in 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively.

Grégory Bourdy of France will also have fond memories of Pula Golf Club, having triumphed there in 2007, whilst his fellow European Tour champion Paul McGinley of Ireland will use the event to continue his comeback from the knee injury which recently kept him sidelined for four months.

As well as helping to recruit a new sponsor, promoters Match Golf have also reached an agreement with the Hotel Association of the Cala Millor Bay, who will provide their support and also accommodation for players and officials alike.

Comprising a total of 63 hotels, the Hotel Association of the Cala Millor Bay covers the area of the island between the “Costa de los Pinos” and the “Punta de n’Amer”, a striking coastal region renowned for its natural beauty.

The Association’s chief aim is to promote the area, maintain its beauty, conserve its businesses interests and project Cala Millor as one of Mallorca’s most picturesque resorts.

The Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Regional Department of Tourism, has also made a substantial effort to ensure its collaboration in the promotion and organisation of the tournament.

Several organizations and companies, as well as the Hotel Association of Cala Millor Bay, The Government of the Balearic Islands and Iberdrola, will support the tournament: the municipalities of Sant Llorenç and Son Servera, the Madrid Ryder Cup 2018 Bid, the Mallorca UD Foundation, the golf courses of Canyamel and Capdepera, the hotel chain Hipotels, Hotel Pula Suites, Hotel Girasol, Hotel Valldemossa, Hotel Vistamer, Golf’Us, Kyocera, Oxidoc, Katia Jewelry, Montepinos, Gefco, Titleist, Bondinar Catering, MARCA, El Mundo, Expansión, Diario Sport, Radio Mania and restaurants Piazzetta Sa Punta and Paparazzi.
