How to tame Augusta National

Every golfer in the world dreams of testing him or herself at Augusta National.

The Georgia layout has always been famous for its fast greens but has never been afraid to move with the times, with recent changes making it one of the longest tracks on Tour.

That combination has made it one of the most challenging golf courses on earth and here we take a look at how some of the main contenders are going to approach it at the Masters Tournament this week.

Rory McIlroy

"I think I'm going to take a slightly more conservative approach off the second tee. I'm going to hit three‑wood off the second and just lay up short of that bunker this week. Over the years I've tried to hit that second green in two, my success rate isn't very high. So if the pin is on the left, I'll miss the green right and try to get up‑and‑down for birdie, and if the pin is on the left, I'll do the opposite.

"Apart from that, I feel like I've got a good game plan for this golf course. The par fives, if you play them the right way, are very, very important. And if you can play those well this week and play the other holes conservatively and smartly and take your pars and a birdie or two comes up from them, that's great."

Jason Day

"There's a lot of drivers around this golf course. There's a few metal woods, but there's a lot of drivers. The fairways are wider compared to normal Tour events. There are some that are a little bit tighter, but this is a second‑shot golf course. If you can place yourself on the greens correctly on the correct quadrant of the green, you can give yourself a putt that's semi‑easy."

Phil Mickelson

"The four par fives and number three are really the only holes that I enter thinking that a birdie is the score I need to make. Maybe number 12 when there's no wind. If there's no wind, you try to birdie 12. But we've been getting wind and we should have wind, which is going to make it one of the more difficult shots now."

Adam Scott

"Some greens are more severe than others, but you do have to be very precise, because if you're a little bit off with your iron play, from the fairway, if you're off with your tee shots, then you're going to have a really long day. But if you're off with your iron play from the fairway, you're going to have a long day on the greens putting from 40 feet and not giving yourself a lot of chances.

"There are great opportunities here at this golf course, but also if the mistakes are made in the wrong areas, there's a disaster waiting to happen on every shot."

Henrik Stenson

"I think my strategy is to play a little bit more aggressive this year and shoot a bit more for the pins, because I feel like I tried to play a little too defensive in the past, and if you're looking at the leaders and the winners, they all tend to make about 20 birdies this week. There's no point going out there with a strategy to try and make 14 birdies and no bogeys. That's still going to come up short."
