Host Garcia hails Open de España

Sergio Garcia heralded a successful week both on and off the course as his foundation hosted the Real Club Valderrama Open de España.

Andrew Johnston eventually prevailed at Valderrama at one over, the first time a regular European Tour event has been won with an over par total for 20 years, but Garcia pushed the Englishman close with a closing 67.

The home fans were excited by the prospect of a Spanish win as Garcia, who started the day seven shots off the lead, made the turn in 32 and moved into a share of the lead with birdies on the 16th and 17th.

A closing bogey saw him set the clubhouse target a three over and, while that did not prove enough for victory, the 36 year old still secured his 11th top ten finish at Valderrama in 12 European Tour events.

"I am just short," he said. "But I've done my best – it's one of those things – I got a massive flyer on the last. I left myself in a tough spot, but still thought I'd chip that in but unfortunately it didn't happen.

"It was exciting today, I played very nicely – even though my wrist was giving me a little bit of trouble. But I managed to hit a lot of great shots, I made some great recoveries and holed some nice putts.

"It's just a shame on the last, I got a massive flyer with the eight iron. I hit it 195yrds when I'm supposed to hit 165. But that happens so I'm proud the way the tournament has gone, and the way I have played having played four weeks in a row, which is tiring, but we've raised a lot of money for our foundation."

Garcia's Foundation, which was set up in 2002, was raising money and awareness for the Asociación Espanola Contra el Cancer (AECC), the largest cancer charity based in Spain.

Over €66,000 was raised and that will provide accommodation for families whilst their children are undergoing cancer treatment.

"The week has been great - very successful with the Foundation," he added. "We are delighted with that. It was one of the biggest goals at the beginning of the week.

"It's great and everyone should be very proud, Valderrama, everyone. It's probably one of the best Spanish Opens I've played in for sure, so I'm really happy with that."
