Horsey races into second round in Scotland

David Horsey and James Morrison raced into the second round as the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play got under way at Archerfield on Thursday.

The duo were out in the second and third matches of the day and made short work of defeating Sébastien Gros and Alvaro Quiros to advance to the last 32.

Morrison, the 11th seed, had been enjoying a productive season with three top tens but had missed his last five cuts coming into this event.

A birdie-birdie start saw the Englishman quickly move two up against Quiros and while the Spaniard won the fourth, Morrison won the fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 13th  to romp to a 6 and 5 victory with seven birdies.

Countryman Horsey fell behind early as Gros made an eagle on the second but the French number 21 seed would make only one further birdie as Horsey won the fifth, seventh, eighth, tenth, 12th, 13th and 14th in a 6 and 4 win.

Horsey will next face Haydn Porteous or John Parry, with the South African one up against the Englishman after 16 holes.

Graeme Storm was two up after 12 holes of his all English clash against Tommy Fleetwood while Simon Khan led Spain's Pablo Larrazábal by the same mark.

Swede Johan Carlsson was a commanding four up after ten holes against Denmark's Morten Ørum Madsen, while countryman Magnus A Carlsson was three up after eight holes against Chase Koepka.

Michael Hoey also held a three-hole lead over David Drysdale after six holes.

American Peter Uihlein was two up through 11 holes against Oliver Fisher, with Robert Rock one up against Gary Stal at the turn and local favourite Marc Warren one up after eight against Jorge Campillo.

Richie Ramsay, Grégory Havret and Chris Paisley were all one up in the early stages of their matches against David Howell, Roope Kakko and Benjamin Hebert respectively.

The matches between Matthew Southgate and Kristoffer Broberg, and David Lipsky and Prom Meesawat were both all square on the front nine.
