History-makers Billy and Brittany Horschel raised US$10,000 for charity on day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship as Billy put himself in a good position in the individual event at Carnoustie.
The duo are the first husband and wife pair to team up in the event and were making a $1,000 donation to Ralph Lauren's Pink Pony campaign for breast cancer awareness for every birdie they made.
Billy made nine birdies in an impressive 65 at Carnoustie Golf Links as he got to seven under, one behind the first-round leaders, with Brittany contributing another gain in the team event where they finished at nine under.
In wet and potentially muddy conditions in Scotland, pink may not have been the colour of choice for many, but the Horschels were getting truly into the spirit, with Billy sporting pink trousers and Brittany wearing a pink jacket.
"This month is Breast Cancer Aware Month and Ralph Lauren and their Pink Pony campaign, we are supporting it, so every birdie we make is $1,000, so we made quite a few of them today," said Billy.
"We will be having pink the next three days as well. Doesn't matter what the weather looks like, we are going to bring some brightness to the weather the next few days."
Carnoustie is widely considered the most difficult of the three courses played this week but Horschel made seven birdies as he turned in a scintillating 29 before coming home in level par with two more.
"I putted very well today," he said. "I putt very well normally but today was one of those special days where the hole looked like the size of the ocean. Every putt, if it didn't go in, was burning the edge.
"So yeah, it was a really good day of putting the ball on the green and making putts, and that's what I did, and I've got to do that the next few days to contend going into Sunday."
