Home favourite Stenson hits the front

Henrik Stenson was giving the home fans plenty to cheer as he burst into the lead during the third round of the Nordea Masters.

The World Number Two holed his approach to the seventh for eagle en route to an outward 31 at PGA Sweden National.

At ten under par he led by one from overnight co-leaders Eddie Pepperell and Alvaro Quiros, as well as Scotland’s Chris Doak.

With Friday’s strong breezes having dissipated at the Malmö venue, a day of lower scoring was summed up by Stenson’s brilliant front nine.

A ten foot putt at the first provided one of three birdies, but it was his eight iron from 155 yards that produced the biggest roar from the galleries.

Big-hitting Quiros eagled the first from six feet and birdied the third to reach nine under, but Pepperell and Doak were keeping pace with the Spaniard.

England’s Pepperell set off with a hat-trick of gains, while Doak had four birdies in an outward 32.

Doak’s compatriot Stephen Gallacher was fifth on eight under, with England’s James Morrison setting the clubhouse target a shot further back with a joint best-of-the-week 66.

Stenson followed a birdie at the 11th with another from five feet at the 14th, but a dropped shot at the next saw him overtaken by Gallacher, who picked up a fourth straight gain from three feet at the 14th to reach 12 under.

That was one ahead of Stenson, Pepperell and Quiros, with Dubuisson a shot further back.
