David Borda is hoping to make more memories at Izki Golf Club when he tees it up in the 20th anniversary of the Challenge de España this week.
The Spaniard will make his 2019 European Challenge Tour debut at Izki Golf after spending the start of the 2019 season travelling the world on the European Tour.
Borda gained his European Tour card via Qualifying School, holing a birdie putt on the last hole to take the 22nd card in November and has since visited six countries in three continents. This week the travelling takes a back seat as he enjoys the comforts of home and a course he knows all too well.
Izki Golf celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and the 32-year-old is one man who has seen the development of the venue, having spent over half his life on the lush green grass of the Urturi track.
“It’s a course I know very well,” he said. “I’ve been playing it since I was ten years old, so I have a lot of good memories around here.
“I don’t know if my experience will help because most of the field have played this course as it hosted the event the last two years, but we’ll see.
“At the beginning of the season I played in South Africa, then in Australia, Oman, Qatar, Kenya, and last week in Morocco. At the start of the season there was a lot of long days travelling, but now we are starting to play in Europe which is good.
“I’m staying at home this week, which is nice, and I’m looking forward to a good tournament and playing in Spain.”
The Pamplona native will hope to perform well on a course he has spent many years playing but he will not be feeling the pressure, with last year’s Qualifying School preparing him well for 2019.
“Q-School is the most stressful tournament in the world,” he said. “It was very tough.
“I started really well and I was leading after the first two rounds. I eventually got my European Tour card on the last hole with a birdie putt, which felt amazing.”
