The Northern Irishman aced the par three 17that Izki Golf, the venue for the Challenge de España, during his second round 71.

On a day of testing conditions in northern Spain, Hoey stepped up to the plate on the penultimate hole of the course.

The 39 year old fired a seven iron towards the pin on the 180-yard par three before seeing his ball drop into the hole for his first ace in three years.

And after signing for a one under par 71 which means he’ll go into the weekend on two under, Hoey thanked his sponsors Titleist for his new clubs.

“Thanks to the guys at Titleist for spending some time with me on Monday in Cambridge," he said. "The new clubs are feeling really good and the seven iron I hit – the AP2 – came off the face really nicely.

“I’ve played that hole in three shots over the two days, which is always nice. I think it’s been three years since my last hole-in-one so thanks to the guys at Titleist.

“I feel like I’m playing close to really good. I’m putting well and you never know in golf. That hole-in-one was a nice kickstart to my season.”

The Northern Irishman was presented with a bottle of Spanish red wine, courtesy of hole-in-one sponsor Herederos del Marques de Riscal, by Challenge Tour Director Alain de Soultrait in celebration of his ace.

Hoey’s ace is the second of the Challenge Tour season after Marcos Pastor’s career-first hole-in-one at the Turkish Airlines Challenge last week.
