Historic Colomo delighted with perfect finish

Javier Colomo made the cut in spectacular style at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open as he recorded the first hole in one on a par four in European Tour history.

The Spaniard started his round on the back nine and a three-putt bogey on the eighth, his penultimate hole, had left him two over par and facing an early exit.

Needing a birdie to reach the weekend, Colomo opted to take driver on the 329 yard par four, and duly holed his tee shot for albatross.

It means the first tri-sanctioned event between the European, Asian and Sunshine Tour will go down in the record books after Colomo became the first player in the history of all three tours to ace a par four.

“It’s the first time in my life I hit an unbelievable driver, very high with a little cut,” said Colomo.

“I tried to stop the ball on the green and the ball found the hole. I needed a birdie to make the cut, double eagle is just fantastic.

“I did a good job for 36 holes - I deserved to play the weekend. After the three putt on eight, I was very angry. I thought I could hit a good driver and make eagle or birdie.

“We couldn’t see, but we heard some guys shouting but we couldn’t believe that.

“We thought the ball was very close but when we were on the fairway, we couldn’t see the ball on the green, and then one guy told me that the ball was in the hole. It was a perfect shot.”

There are prizes on offer for an ace at the 17th and an albatross at the 18th, but Colomo was not dejected about missing out on an additional bonus.

“Now I know what to do, maybe I will try for sure on those holes,” he joked.
