Hatton holds narrow advantage in Abu Dhabi

Tyrrell Hatton will take a one-shot lead into final round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship but he will have a congested leaderboard of course-specialists and Major Championship winners chasing him down.

The Englishman has been a picture of consistency of late, with seven top tens in his last 11 events including his maiden European Tour win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October.

He has carried that form into 2017 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club and followed up opening rounds of 67-68 with another 68 on day three to get to 13 under but he is faced with an intimidating chasing pack.

US Open champion Dustin Johnson tied the lowest round of the week with a 64 to get to 12 under alongside three-time winner in Abu Dhabi Martin Kaymer, 2014 champion Pablo Larrazábal, Thai Kiradech Aphibarnrat and England's Tommy Fleetwood.

There were 15 players within three shots of the leader, including Open champion Henrik Stenson, four-time 2016 winner Alex Noren and 23-time European Tour winner Lee Westwood.

"The big names are up there so I've just got to focus on my game and try and play as well as I can," said Hatton.

"I love this place. It's one of my favourite events of the year so hopefully I can go out there tomorrow and have a good day.

"I had a little bit of a slow start. Struggled a little bit on the greens today, just not quite starting the ball on the lines I wanted to. But I holed a couple of good putts in the end on the back nine and hopefully that will give me some momentum going into tomorrow.

"It's a little bit of a surprise to see where I'm at this week but very happy with one round to go.

"I didn't do a whole lot of practice. I spent most of my time playing Xbox and chilling out at home."

After struggling with jet-lag in the early part of the week, Johnson opened with rounds of 72-68 but made six birdies and an eagle to catapult himself to within one shot of the lead on Saturday.

The American made an early move with birdies on the first, third and sixth and a chip-in eagle on the eighth before reeling off a hat-trick of birdies from the 15th. That had him in the clubhouse while the leaders were still in the early stages of their rounds and with the wind getting up, they struggled to get past him.

German Kaymer briefly hit 13 under when he birdied the eighth after getting up and down from a bunker but bogeys on the tenth and 11th stalled his progress before he recorded a birdie on the 17th to get back to 12 under in a 72.

Hatton had turned in 36 but made three birdies in four holes from the 11th to get into a share for the lead and when Aphibarnrat made his fourth birdie of the day on the 14th, there was a four-way tie for the lead.

Spaniard Larrazábal had shown his intent with a holed bunker shot on the first  and after a further two birdies and a bogey, he rolled a monster putt up the slope on the 17th to make it a five-way share.

Hatton then took advantage of the par five last to hit the front on his own and Fleetwood followed suit in the final group to sign for a 70.

South Koreans Byeong-hun An and Jeunghun Wang, South African Dean Burmester, Swede Peter Hanson and Austrian Bernd Wiesberger were then at 11 under, a shot clear of Noren, Stenson, Englishmen Westwood and Ross Fisher, and German Maximilian Kieffer.
