Haas wins as Garcia impresses

Bill Haas beat Major Champions Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley in a play-off to win the Northern Trust Open as Sergio Garcia almost snatched an unlikely victory.

The Spaniard started the final round nine shots behind overnight leaders Mickelson and Bradley, but tore through the field with a sensational seven under par 64.

That included eagles at the 11th and 15th in a brilliant outward 30 that also featured a huge birdie putt on the 16th.

Further birdies at the first and third – the latter a brilliant downhill left-to-right putt from 40 feet – had Garcia right in the mix, but he played the last six holes in one over par to finish on five under, two behind the leading trio.

Haas carded a two under par 69 in regulation to catch Mickelson and Bradley, before a birdie three on the second extra hole earned him the title.

Garcia shared fourth with Australian Jarrod Lyle and Americans Jimmy Walker and Dustin Johnson.
