Gould pounces as Ruangkit falters

Englishman John Gould produced a flawless four under par front nine to move into firm contention for his maiden Senior Tour title as overnight leader Boonchu Ruangkit faltered in the final round of the Benahavis Senior Masters.

Gould started the day two shots behind Ruangkit but birdies on the first, fourth, sixth and eighth holes saw him wipe out the gap by the turn, after the Thai player dropped shots on the seventh and eighth holes having opened with three birdies in his first four holes.

The pair were tied on 11 under par at the top of the leaderboard as they headed into the back nine, with both keeping a close eye on their personal goals.

Ruangkit is bidding for his fourth victory of the season – a feat that would further strengthen his grip at the top of the Order of Merit.

Gould, on the other hand, is trying to secure his playing rights for next season, with the Senior Tour rookie currently lying in 51st position on the Order of Merit.

Defending champion Carl Mason, the last player to win four title in a season in 2007, also remains in contention with birdies on the first and ninth holes bookending his front nine as he moved to eight under par, three behind the leaders.
